iRobot’s Roomba Max 715 Still Needs You Once a Week

If you want the Roomba Max 715 so you can stop thinking about vacuuming, plan on a short weekly routine anyway. Its dock pulls the dirt out of the robot after every run and seals it in a bag that iRobot rates for up to 90 days. The owner's guide still asks for the rubber brushes, the filter and the dust bin to be cleaned every week.

The Max 715 is iRobot's current vacuum-only Max, sold as the next-generation version of the Max 705 Vac. Inside iRobot's own range, the cheaper choice is the Roomba 105 Vac with an AutoEmpty dock. Its dock carries the same rating, but it has a bristle brush and no obstacle recognition. The robot's figures here come from iRobot's product page and owner's guide, and we have no independent measurement of how either robot cleans.

The guide also says the filter must never be washed, so a worn one goes in the trash.

In a home with a shedding pet, the Max 715's rubber brushes and obstacle recognition justify paying more than for a Roomba 105. The dock spares you the trash run after each clean, and the weekly brush and filter care stays with you.

Strengths

  • Rubber brushes with pull-off end caps
  • LiDAR plus obstacle recognition that iRobot trains on cords, shoes, toys and pet waste
  • Bags that seal shut as they leave the dock

How we reviewed it

Basis
Research-based: assessed from the manufacturer’s published specifications, documentation and the independent sources listed at the end. We have not tested this unit ourselves; any measurement quoted belongs to the cited source.
Method

iRobot's owner's guide for the Max 710-719 Vac robots supplied the care chart and the part replacement intervals. The setup rules and every drawing on this page come from the same guide. iRobot's product page for item W255020 supplied the brush, navigation and dock claims, the suction footnotes, the spec table and the comparison with the Roomba 105. The ownership details in the navigation section come from the release iRobot filed with the SEC on January 23, 2026.

Evidence

Performance and feature statements are iRobot's own claims. The maintenance schedule is quoted from the owner's guide. The suction comparison is our reading of the footnotes on iRobot's product page.

Limitations

We have no independent measurement of this model's pickup, suction, runtime or noise, and iRobot publishes no pascal, runtime, bin or noise figure for it. The robot's height is unknown because iRobot's spec table repeats the dock's dimensions in the robot's row. This assessment covers the US Max 715 Vac sold with the AutoEmpty dock, item W255020.

Ninety days for the bag, one week for the brushes

6.4/10Fair

The hands-free days on iRobot's product page describe the dock's bag. After every run the dock pulls the dirt out of the robot's bin into a sealed carbon bag. iRobot says those AllergenLock bags capture particles down to 0.7 microns. The dock's light turns red when the bag is full or missing, and lifting the bag out by its card seals it, so the dust stays inside on the way to the trash.

iRobot's care chart for the robot itself asks for more. Clean the rubber brushes and the filter once a week, and the filter twice a week if a pet lives in the house. The dust bin needs emptying and cleaning at least weekly too, or cleaning performance may drop, the guide warns. Every two weeks it's the edge brush, the caster wheel and the charging contacts. Once a month, wipe the robot's sensors and the dock's contacts, infrared window and filter.

So iRobot's rating counts how often a bag gets changed. It doesn't count how long the robot goes untouched.

iRobot also suggests a new filter and a new edge brush every three to six months. The rubber brushes last six to twelve months. Because the filter can't be washed, it's a running cost along with the bags, and the box includes one spare of each. If buying bags bothers you, bagless docks swap that cost for emptying a canister by hand.

Rubber brushes, the edge brush and the 4X claim

7.2/10Good

Underneath, the Max 715 has two multi-surface rubber brushes and one edge-sweeping brush, which iRobot calls anti-tangle and upgraded. Both rubber brushes have end caps that pull off, and the guide shows hair collecting beneath them. Carpet Boost raises suction when the robot detects a rug, and Dirt Detect sends it back over large dry messes it spots ahead. iRobot also says Smart Clean learns which rooms get dirtiest and cleans them first.

iRobot gives no pascal figure for the Max 715, only "4X more power-lifting suction". Most footnotes on its product page, and its comparison chart, measure that against the entry-level Roomba 105. One paragraph footnotes the same 4X to the Max 705 Vac instead. Both footnotes can only be right if the 105 and the 705 pull equally hard, and iRobot publishes no suction figure for either.

Amazon's listing title says 30,000 Pa, a number iRobot's own page never uses. The edge brush's claim to reach more dirt is measured against Roomba 600-series robots sold before 2026. iRobot's Max 875 Combo launch used a different baseline for nearly every claim as well.

LiDAR, obstacle recognition and who owns iRobot

7.6/10Good

Top view from iRobot's owner's guide, with the ClearView Pro LiDAR turret and the robot's two buttons marked. Diagram: BetterBuyBase, from iRobot's owner's guide

The Max 715 pairs a ClearView Pro LiDAR turret with PrecisionVision, iRobot's AI obstacle recognition. iRobot says it steers around cords, shoes, toys and pet waste. Its comparison chart gives the Roomba 105 plain ClearView LiDAR, with no PrecisionVision and no 3D maps.

iRobot says the first map of a 1,000 sq ft space takes 9 minutes. The robot keeps up to five maps and names the rooms itself. Before that first map, the guide asks for a six-hour charge, because battery readings can be off for the first few days. Each room gets its edges cleaned first and then the rest in rows, and the robot docks to recharge and resume when a large floor drains it.

The robot has only two buttons, Home and Power. Setup needs the Roomba Home app and a Wi-Fi network, and the guide recommends the app for room cleaning, schedules and routines. Alexa, Siri and Google Assistant can start or schedule a clean.

A robot that can't be set up without an app depends on its maker staying in business. iRobot left a pre-packaged Chapter 11 on January 23, 2026, when Picea bought all of the company, according to the release iRobot filed with the SEC. Picea was already iRobot's main contract manufacturer and its lender. The same filing describes iRobot Safe, a US subsidiary with an independent board of US citizens that is responsible for protecting US customer data. iRobot stays headquartered in Bedford, Massachusetts.

Dock placement and the price step from the 105

6.6/10Fair

The dock needs a hard, level floor out of direct sunlight, at least 4 feet from any stairs. Its cord wraps around the back, so the robot doesn't catch it on the way in and out.

iRobot's spec table gives the robot the same dimensions as its dock, which can't be right for a robot built to drive under furniture. Measure the gap under your lowest sofa and ask iRobot's support before counting on the Max 715 to reach under it.

At list price the Max 715 costs well over the Roomba 105 Vac with its AutoEmpty dock, and both docks carry the same bag rating. The difference buys the Pro LiDAR, the obstacle recognition, 3D maps and the rubber brushes. iRobot's store sells both with a 60-day home trial and free returns on robots.

Alternatives worth considering

iRobot Roomba 105

Take the Roomba 105 if the floors stay clear of cables and pet toys and the budget is tight. iRobot gives its dock the same bag rating, but the robot has a bristle brush, plain ClearView LiDAR and no obstacle recognition.

iRobot Roomba Max 775

Take the Max 775 Combo if hard floors need washing. It adds a roller mop and a dock that washes it with hot water, and that dock takes up far more room.

Score breakdown

Scores run from 1.0 to 10.0: 9+ exceptional, 8–8.9 excellent, 7–7.9 good, 6–6.9 fair, 5–5.9 mediocre, below 5 poor. The overall score is the weighted average of the rated sections. Unrated sections do not count.

Pros

  • Rubber brushes with pull-off end caps
  • LiDAR plus obstacle recognition that iRobot trains on cords, shoes, toys and pet waste
  • Bags that seal shut as they leave the dock
  • A map per floor

Cons

  • Weekly brush, filter and bin cleaning in iRobot's own care chart
  • A filter that can't be washed and has to be replaced every few months
  • No mopping of any kind
  • Suction stated only as a 4X multiple, footnoted to two different robots
  • Robot height missing from iRobot's spec table

Conclusion

The Max 715's dock takes over the dirtiest job, emptying the bin after every run, and leaves the routine care to you. What it adds over a cheaper Roomba is the rubber brushes underneath and the obstacle recognition at the front. Both pay off where hair and floor clutter show up every day, so a tidy home without pets gets less for the extra money.

Andreea-Viviana Jitaru’s take

The filter that can't be washed is the detail that stays with me, because it turns a low-maintenance pitch into a standing order for filters. I'd still take the rubber brushes over the 105's bristle brush for a house with a long-haired dog, and I'd set a weekly reminder for the brushes and filter on the first day.

Best for
  • Homes with a shedding dog or cat
  • Two-story houses
  • Owners of an older Roomba with a bristle brush
Consider an alternative if
  • Your floors need mopping
  • You want a robot that asks nothing of you between bag changes
  • You need it to clean under a low sofa

Questions readers ask

Can you wash the Roomba Max 715 filter?

No. iRobot's owner's guide says not to wash the filter and to take it out before rinsing the dust bin. Tap the debris out over a trash can or wipe it with a clean cloth, and iRobot suggests a new filter every few months.

Does the Roomba Max 715 mop?

No. It is the vacuum-only model in iRobot's Max range, with no water tank and no pad. The Max 775 Combo adds a roller mop and a dock that washes it.

About the reviewer

Editor

Andreea edits the written side of the site: the editor's note on each product page, the category buying guides and the blog. Her brief is to say what a specification table cannot: where a product is good, where it quietly compromises, and who should walk past it. A note that reads like marketing copy, or that praises a product without naming a drawback, does not go live.

This is a research-based assessment: the reviewer compiled it from published specifications, documentation and independent measurements rather than from testing the unit.
