Editor’s note

The PIXMA TR4720 exists to win one argument: nothing under a hundred dollars gives you a genuine four-in-one. Print, copy, scan and fax, a 20-sheet document feeder, and automatic two-sided printing — that combination at its typical $59-79 street price is essentially unanswered. Canon sells the identical machine as the TR4722 through Walmart and Amazon, so treat the two names as one product and buy whichever is cheaper.

The catch — and with sub-$100 inkjets there is always exactly this catch — is ink. The TR4720 uses a two-cartridge system: a pigment black plus one tri-color cartridge, which means when the cyan runs dry you replace the whole color unit. Per-page costs are steep for anything beyond occasional printing; Canon's Pixma Print Plan subscription softens it, but if you print regularly, the arithmetic favors a supertank machine within months.

The rest of the compromise list is what the price predicts. It's slow — 8.8 pages a minute in black, 4.4 in color. The screen is a two-line non-touch LCD; Wi-Fi is 2.4 GHz only; there's no Ethernet; and the ADF scans one side only. None of that is a scandal at this money, but it draws the boundary clearly: this is a machine for a household that prints boarding passes, school forms and the odd tax return, not for anyone's office workload.

For that household — printing a few dozen pages a month, wanting a copier and feeder on hand — I think it's the sensible default under $100. If your monthly page count climbs into the hundreds, spend more once on an Epson EcoTank ET-2400-class tank printer and stop renting your ink back from Canon.

How the VS Score works — and what it can’t tell you

Every measurable spec is scored against the average of all the printers we track: matching the class average scores 50, clearly beating it climbs towards 100, and each spec counts according to an editorial weight that reflects real-world impact — a battery-capacity gap moves the score far more than a colour-options list. The quality bars on the spec cards above show where this model sits inside the full range for its class, and the overall VS Score rolls every weighted result into one number.

Unknown values are never estimated. A spec this product doesn’t report simply drops out of its scoring — it isn’t penalised with a guess — but a thinner spec sheet does mean a score built on fewer data points, which is why completeness is disclosed under About this data.

Most importantly: a spec-sheet lead is not the same as a better product. Megapixels, gigahertz and benchmark points describe capacity, not experience — image processing, software optimisation, thermals, haptics and ergonomics decide how a device actually feels, and no table captures reliability or long-term support quality. Treat the VS Score as a structured summary of what can be measured, not a substitute for your own priorities.

About this data

  • Specifications are compiled from each manufacturer’s official spec sheet, cross-checked against trusted specification databases, and normalised into one schema so identical things are compared identically.
  • Specifications last verified August 21, 2026.
  • Data completeness: 22 of the 24 specs in this category are verified (92%). Anything we could not verify is shown as Unknown — never estimated — and is excluded from the score.
  • Prices and availability come from live retailer feeds via our shopping partners and refresh throughout the day; a missing price means no partner currently lists the product, not that it is discontinued.

The bottom line

The Canon PIXMA TR4720 earns a VS Score of 43, trailing most of the 51 printers we compare here, at least on the spec sheet.

Who it’s for
Low-volume households that want a full 4-in-1 — copier, 20-sheet ADF, fax, auto-duplex — for well under $100: school forms, boarding passes, the occasional tax return.
Who should look elsewhere
Anyone printing regularly: the tri-color cartridge system (replace all colors when one dies) makes steady volume expensive, and 8.8/4.4 ppm with a simplex ADF rules out real office duty.
The trade-off that matters
Hardware generosity versus ink economics — Canon sells the features cheap and earns it back per page; fine if the printer sleeps most of the month, painful if it doesn't.
The main alternative
Epson EcoTank ET-2400 — roughly triple the upfront price with no ADF or fax, but its refillable tanks end the cartridge treadmill; the right call once you print weekly.

The VS Score is generated automatically from the weighted specifications above, measured against all other printers in our database. Treat it as a shortlisting guide — not a substitute for your own priorities.
