SteelSeries Aerox 3 Wireless (2022): Specs, Pros & Cons

SteelSeries made a decision with the Aerox 3 Wireless that has since become unfashionable: it polls at 1,000 Hz. The competitive flagships around it run 4,000 or 8,000 Hz radios, and they pay for it in power, which is why their battery figures are quoted in tens of hours and this one is quoted at two hundred.

Whether that reads as a compromise or a feature depends entirely on the buyer. Nobody has shown that a person can feel the difference between 1,000 Hz and 8,000 Hz in a game, and everybody can feel the difference between charging a mouse weekly and charging it seasonally. It also quick-charges over USB-C, so the occasions when it does run flat are short ones.

Physically it is a 68-gram honeycomb shell, light without being extreme. What separates it from most perforated mice is an IP54 rating. Hollowing out a shell leaves the internals exposed, and IP54 means dust ingress and splashing water have been accounted for, so this is a perforated mouse you can genuinely clean rather than one you handle carefully and hope for.

The sensing is where it sits below the top tier. TrueMove Air reads to 18,000 DPI and tracks to 400 IPS, against 750 IPS and beyond on the flagships. That gap only becomes real at very low sensitivity with fast swipes, which describes a specific playing style rather than a general shortcoming. Six buttons, three connection modes and switches rated to 80 million clicks fill out the rest.

The body is small and right-handed, so it suits claw and fingertip grips and smaller palms, and it will feel cramped to anyone accustomed to a full-size mouse.

Editor’s note

The Aerox 3 Wireless has a honeycomb shell, and the specification that makes that acceptable is one most perforated mice do not carry: an IP54 rating.

Hollowing out a mouse to save weight leaves the internals exposed, and the obvious question is what happens when dust, crumbs or a spilled drink get in. IP54 means the internals are protected against dust ingress and splashing water — so this is a perforated mouse you can actually clean, rather than one you handle carefully and hope for.

At 68 g it is light without being extreme, and battery life is a quoted 200 hours with quick charging over USB-C — several times what the competitive flagships here manage, because 1,000 Hz polling and a modest sensor draw far less power than an 8 kHz radio does. Connection is wired, 2.4 GHz or Bluetooth.

The sensing is where it sits below the top tier. TrueMove Air runs to 18,000 DPI with 400 IPS tracking, against 750 to 900 IPS on the flagships — only a limitation at very low sensitivity with fast swipes. The switches are IP54-rated Golden Micro, good for 80 million clicks, and the feet are PTFE.

The ambidextrous shape at 120.6 mm suits claw and fingertip grips.

Buy it if you want a light wireless mouse with long battery life that tolerates a real desk. Buy a flagship sensor if you play at very low sensitivity and swipe hard.

The bottom line

The SteelSeries Aerox 3 Wireless (2022) earns a VS Score of 45, a solid mid-pack result among the 79 mice we compare here. It stands out for more connection options, a lighter build and quick charge. Just be aware of much shorter battery life and a much lower polling rate before you buy. Weigh those trade-offs against what matters most to you.

The VS Score is calculated from the weighted specifications above, compared with every other mouse we track — a shortlisting guide, not a substitute for your own priorities. See how we score.
