Canon PIXMA TR7120: Specs, Features, Pros & Cons
A PIXMA in the TR line without a fax modem is a slightly odd object. Canon has used that two-letter prefix for years to mark its small-office models, the ones with a document feeder, a paper cassette and a phone socket, while the TS range covered the home. This one keeps the feeder and the cassette and drops the phone line, which is entirely defensible in 2026 and does leave the model sitting between two of Canon's own categories rather than inside either.
What it inherits from the office side is the feeder, and that is the single feature here worth paying extra for. Copying or scanning a multi-page document without lifting the lid between sheets is the difference between a printer you tolerate and one you use, and it is the reason to take this over the cheaper Canon sitting next to it on the shelf. It reads one side per pass, so double-sided originals still have to be turned over by hand.
Be careful with the resolution row on any inkjet comparison, this one included. Manufacturers quote print resolution as a single figure, as a pair of unequal axes, as a native value or as an interpolated one, and the results are not comparable between brands or even reliably within one brand's own listings. Very little about how a page looks can be read off it.
The structural limitation is the ink. Two cartridges, one pigment black and one three-color unit, means the color side empties as a set: exhaust a single color and the whole cartridge is replaced with usable ink still inside it. For light, mixed household printing that is a fair trade for a low purchase price. For anyone printing color in any quantity it is the reason to be looking at individual inks or refillable tanks instead.

How this VS Score was computed
Score 44: each known spec is measured against the median of all printers (65 products), then weighted; 50 means level with that median. In classes of six or more, a value beyond the class’s 10th–90th percentile range counts as that limit, so one extreme product cannot set the scale. 61% of the scoreable weight could be used; unknown values, features not applicable to this class and proxies (battery capacity where a rated life exists) add or remove nothing.

Editor’s note
The Canon PIXMA TR7120 is Canon's compact home all-in-one for people whose printing splits between documents and photos, and its spec sheet reads like a deliberate exercise in covering the essentials without flourish. Print speeds are approximately 14 ipm in black and 9 in color (unhurried but respectable for the class), with auto duplex printing and borderless photos up to Letter size. The two-cartridge hybrid ink system pairs a pigment black for crisp text with a dye color cartridge that renders 4×6 photos in about 39 seconds. The ChromaLife100 system rates album-stored prints for decades of fade resistance.
What you get around the printing is a 100-sheet cassette, a 35-sheet ADF for multi-page copies and scans, and a flatbed with 1200 x 2400 dpi optical resolution. What you do not get matters just as much: there is no fax, no Ethernet, and the ADF scans a single side per pass. The display is a small 1.42-inch monochrome OLED with no touchscreen, so most configuration happens through the Canon PRINT app, which is also where wireless setup, dual-band Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct live, alongside AirPrint and Mopria support.
Canon's recommended volume for this machine is around 500 pages a month, which frames it accurately: this is a light-duty family printer. The two-cartridge design also means color runs out as a set, so heavy photo printers should look at individual-ink or tank machines instead.
For a household that prints homework, forms, boarding passes and a steady trickle of photos, the TR7120 covers that ground without asking much of you. Anyone with fax needs, wired networking, or volumes beyond a few hundred pages monthly has outgrown it before buying it.

The bottom line
The Canon PIXMA TR7120 earns a VS Score of 44, below the median of the 65 printers it is measured against (a score of 50 is level with that median).
- Who it’s for
- Families printing documents and photos in modest volumes who want Canon's hybrid pigment-and-dye output in a compact, app-driven box.
- Who should look elsewhere
- Anyone needing fax, Ethernet, a touchscreen, or a machine rated for office-scale monthly volume.
- The trade-off that matters
- The two-cartridge hybrid system keeps the printer cheap but makes heavy color printing costly versus individual inks or tanks.
- The main alternative
- HP Envy 6155e: a home all-in-one of about the same size on the same two-cartridge economics. Cross-shop it on cartridge price, because the feature lists are close.
