Feed it a stack of two-sided contracts and it scans both sides in one pass, unattended – a genuine office capability that the HP Smart Tanks and most sub-$300 rivals simply cannot match. Pair it with automatic duplex printing, fax, Gigabit Ethernet and a 2.7-inch touchscreen, and this is a complete small-office machine at $249.99 list.
Speed is the other surprise: Brother's MaxiDrive platform is rated at 28 ISO ppm black and 26 colour – figures verified against Brother's own support documentation, and near-laser territory for an inkjet at this price. The 250-sheet tray handles paper up to Legal size.
The ink story is Brother's INKvestment system: high-yield cartridges rather than tanks, with an 1,800-page black and 750-page colours in the box and a Page Gauge that meters usage. Per-page costs land well below ordinary cartridges but above the bottle-fed supertanks – the trade is a lower purchase price and faster hardware.
