Editor’s note
The ET-2903 is Epson's cheapest current EcoTank, and it exists to make one argument: stop buying ink by the cartridge. Its four tanks are filled from 65 ml keyed bottles – a replacement black is rated at 4,700 ISO pages, each colour at 7,500 – and the bottles in the box are good for up to 3,600 black pages once the initial tank charging takes its share. Epson frames that as up to three years of ink, assuming about a hundred pages a month. Against the 160-page cartridges in a sixty-dollar HP DeskJet, the arithmetic is not close: this wins by roughly a factor of ten on running cost.
What the $199.99 price does not buy is equally clear-cut, and it is the same list as its ET-2800 predecessor. No automatic duplex – every two-sided page is flipped by hand, an omission buyers routinely discover only after purchase. No document feeder, so multi-page copying means lifting the lid one sheet at a time. No fax, no Ethernet, a small non-touch display, and – unusually for 2025 – Wi-Fi 4 only. Colour speed is a modest 6 ISO ppm, though the 11 ppm black figure is genuinely respectable for the class.
One more caveat worth passing on: Epson warns that non-genuine ink can void the warranty, so the third-party-bottle savings people associate with tank printers are not the risk-free play they look.
This is the right machine for a household that prints regularly, mostly single-sided documents, and wants to stop thinking about ink for years at a time. If two-sided printing is part of your life, the ET-2980 exists precisely to fix that – and is the better buy despite the gap in price.
