iRobot Roomba i3: Specs, Features, Pros & Cons

The Roomba i3 cleans in straight, overlapping lines and remembers which rooms it has done, and it manages both with a gyroscope that tracks its own turns and distance. No camera and no laser are involved, which keeps it in the middle of iRobot's range. It is a round, vacuum-only Roomba with a charger for its base.

Below it is the 694, which wanders at random. Above it comes the j7+, which adds camera obstacle recognition and a dock that empties the bin. The i3 takes the part of the upgrade that changes coverage, and leaves the rest for the more expensive models.

That map unlocks most of what people buy an app-connected robot for. You can pick rooms, draw no-go zones, set a schedule and start a run by voice. Rugs get more suction, thanks to carpet detection. The rubber brushes resist hair, a HEPA filter traps fine dust, and the body is compact, with obstacle avoidance listed as well.

The gaps are practical ones. There is no self-emptying dock, so the bin on the robot comes out by hand every few runs. A charge covers less floor than on other robots here, so large homes get cleaned in two sittings with a recharge between them. Short runs also mean the robot spends more of its day on the charger. It does not mop.

The i3 fits a small or medium home with mostly hard floors, where tidy coverage is the upgrade someone wants from a robot that used to wander. Set aside a minute every few runs for the bin, since that is the chore the i3 leaves with you and the one a self-emptying model would take away.

How this VS Score was computed

Score 27: each known spec is measured against the median of all robot vacuums (58 products), then weighted; 50 means level with that median. In classes of six or more, a value beyond the class’s 10th–90th percentile range counts as that limit, so one extreme product cannot set the scale. 20% of the scoreable weight could be used; unknown values, features not applicable to this class and proxies (battery capacity where a rated life exists) add or remove nothing.

Editor’s note

The i3 sits between the cheap Roombas and the smart ones, and the specification that places it is the navigation: gyroscope.

That is the middle of three approaches. Random bouncing, as on the 694, has no idea where it has been. Camera or LiDAR mapping knows the room precisely. A gyroscope tracks the machine's own turns and distance, which is enough to clean in tidy rows and build a usable map without the cost of a camera or a laser turret. In practice it finishes a room properly instead of wandering, which is the single biggest improvement over a budget machine.

The map enables the features people want: room-by-room cleaning, no-go zones, scheduling and voice control. It has a HEPA filter and anti-tangle rubber brushes, and it detects carpet and increases suction there.

Two numbers set expectations. Runtime is 75 minutes, the shortest here, so a large floor will need a recharge and resume. And there is no self-emptying dock, meaning you empty the onboard bin by hand every few runs, and that chore more than any other decides whether a robot stays in use.

At 92 mm tall it clears less furniture than the slimmer machines. It does not mop.

Buy it if you want methodical cleaning and mapping without paying for LiDAR, and emptying a small bin regularly does not put you off. Spend up for a self-emptying dock if it will.

The bottom line

The iRobot Roomba i3 earns a VS Score of 27 on the 20% of specifications we could compare like for like — an indication, not a ranking.

Who it’s for
Small and medium homes that want tidy rows, room-by-room cleaning and no-go zones without paying for LiDAR.
Who should look elsewhere
Skip it if you will not empty a bin by hand every few runs, or if you want a mop.
The trade-off that matters
Short runs. A large floor needs a recharge before it is finished, so a full clean stretches over a longer part of the day.
The main alternative
iRobot Roomba j7+ – camera obstacle recognition and a self-emptying dock, for a home with pets or clutter
