Editor’s note
The Roomba j9+ is the model to choose when the problem is not dirt but obstacles. Its PrecisionVision camera navigation identifies things on the floor — cables, socks, and pet waste, which iRobot guarantees against — and steers around them rather than dragging them across the room.
That is a different design goal from the LiDAR robots, and worth understanding. LiDAR maps faster and works in complete darkness; a camera system needs light but recognises what it is looking at. If you have children, pets or a floor that is never quite clear, recognition is the more useful ability.
Runtime is 175 minutes, which is enough to cover a large home in one pass, and it recharges and resumes if it runs out. The Clean Base dock empties the robot automatically and holds around two months of debris.
The reservations are straightforward. This is a vacuum only — the Combo j9+ is the mopping version and a separate product. Camera navigation is less effective in the dark than LiDAR, so overnight scheduling is less attractive. And j-series robots have never been cheap; the newer 105 costs considerably less if obstacle recognition is not your reason for buying.
Buy it if your floors have things on them, if you own a dog, or if you have previously had a robot vacuum wrap itself around a charging cable.
Buy the Roomba 105 instead if your floors are usually clear and you would rather have faster LiDAR mapping and dark-room operation for less money.
