iRobot Roomba j7+: Specs, Features, Pros & Cons
The camera on the front of the j7+ does two jobs at once. It builds the map the robot navigates by, and it names what lies in the robot's path, from a charging cable to a sock to pet waste, so the robot can steer round it. That second job is the one iRobot put its guarantee behind.
This is a vacuum-only Roomba with a self-emptying dock. The dock takes the dust out of the bin after each run, rubber brushes replace bristles to resist tangled hair, and carpet detection tells the robot when the floor changes. Room selection and no-go zones come from the map, while scheduling and voice control come through the app.
The design has a clear cost. A camera needs light to find its way, so the j7+ is a daytime robot, and a schedule set for three in the morning would send it out half blind. iRobot also lists no HEPA filter for it, and it cannot mop. The mopping version is a separate Combo model.
The body is low enough to slip under most sofas, which is also where toys and stray cables tend to collect in the homes this camera was built for. The dock then deals with whatever the robot picked up.
It earns its camera in a home where the floor is rarely clear, with pet bowls, toys and a desk trailing cables, and where the robot runs while people are up and about. A tidy home with clear floors would be paying for recognition it seldom uses. Anyone whose last robot dragged a charging lead across the room will recognize the problem it was designed around.

The j7+ is the Roomba built around a single promise: it will not spread something unpleasant across your floor.
Its forward-facing camera identifies what it is looking at, and it was the model iRobot backed with a guarantee about pet waste specifically. In a house with a dog or a toddler, that promise answers the failure mode that makes people stop using a robot vacuum altogether. Cables, socks and shoes are handled by the same system.
Navigation is camera-based vSLAM with full mapping, room-by-room cleaning and no-go zones. That is a generation behind the LiDAR machines here in the dark (vSLAM needs light to see, LiDAR does not), but it is what enables the obstacle recognition that is this model's whole point.
iRobot states suction only as ten times that of its old Roomba 500, 600 and 700 series, the dock empties the bin, the brushes are bristle-free anti-tangle rubber, and at 86 mm tall it gets under most furniture. iRobot rates the runtime at up to 75 minutes on hard floors.
Two things it does not do. It does not mop, which is left to the Combo models, sold as separate products. And there is no HEPA filter listed.
Buy it if pets or a cluttered floor are why previous robot vacuums have disappointed you, and you clean in daylight. For night runs a LiDAR machine is the better choice, and the Combo covers mopping.
