Canon Color imageCLASS MF665Cdw: Specs, Price, Pros & Cons

Canon's Color imageCLASS MF665Cdw is a color laser all-in-one for a small office, and it competes on terms most printers ignore: how long the maker stands behind it. Its warranty runs three years where the rivals it is compared against carry one, which on a machine with a drum, a belt and four toners is worth weighing before the speed figures.

The second part that defines it is the scanner. A document feeder reads both sides of each page in a single pass, so a stack of double-sided forms goes through once, with no one standing by to turn it over. Color and black printing run at the same speed, somewhat slower than Brother's MFC-L3780CDW, and the main tray holds 250 sheets.

Office fittings are complete. There is Gigabit Ethernet and Wi-Fi, AirPrint for Apple phones, a USB port for printing from a stick and a fax modem. A large customizable touchscreen puts common jobs one tap away. Wired and wireless connections together let it sit anywhere in a small office.

Fine photo detail is not its brief, and the body is heavy, so it needs a permanent spot on a sturdy surface. The one-sheet bypass tray makes envelopes and labels a chore.

The office it fits scans double-sided paperwork often, prints color in moderate volume and would rather have three years of cover than a few extra pages a minute. Envelopes and label sheets go through that bypass tray one at a time, and no setting changes it.

How this VS Score was computed

Score 80: each known spec is measured against the median of all printers (65 products), then weighted; 50 means level with that median. In classes of six or more, a value beyond the class’s 10th–90th percentile range counts as that limit, so one extreme product cannot set the scale. 64% of the scoreable weight could be used; unknown values, features not applicable to this class and proxies (battery capacity where a rated life exists) add or remove nothing.

Editor’s note

Canon's pitch here is a color laser all-in-one with a single-pass duplex document feeder and a three-year limited warranty. That last item is unusual enough to be a genuine reason to choose it: most competitors in this class ship with one year, and on a machine containing a drum, a belt and four toners, longer cover is worth real money.

The scanner is the other reason. The 50-sheet feeder captures both sides in one pass, rated by Canon at up to 50 pages a minute single-sided and 100 images a minute double-sided in black and white at 300 dpi, so double-sided originals go through once. Canon pairs it with a 5-inch customizable touchscreen, Gigabit Ethernet, a USB host port for printing from and scanning to a stick, and a 33.6 kbps fax modem.

Printing is where it gives ground. Up to 26 ppm for both black and color is respectable but slower than Brother's 31 ppm equivalent. Canon quotes print resolution of up to 1200 x 1200 dpi, processed from a 600 x 600 dpi engine, which suits text and business graphics.

The specification that would irritate me daily is the multipurpose tray, which holds exactly one sheet. Envelopes, labels and letterhead all feed one at a time. If any part of your work involves a stack of envelopes, this is the wrong machine and it will not improve.

Other notes: the output tray holds 100 sheets, the starter toners are small at roughly 500 pages color and 700 black, and peak draw is 1080 watts.

I would take this over faster rivals for an office that scans a lot, prints moderately and wants the warranty. I would not take it for envelope-heavy work at any price.

The bottom line

The Canon Color imageCLASS MF665Cdw earns a VS Score of 80, above the median of the 65 printers it is measured against (a score of 50 is level with that median).

Who it’s for
Small offices that scan double-sided paperwork often, print color in moderate volume, and value three years of warranty on a machine full of consumable parts.
Who should look elsewhere
Anyone who regularly runs envelopes, labels or letterhead (the one-sheet bypass tray makes specialty media a chore), or who wants the fastest output at this price.
The trade-off that matters
Longer warranty cover and single-pass duplex scanning in exchange for slower printing than its direct rivals.
The main alternative
Brother MFC-L3780CDW is faster at 31 ppm with the same single-pass duplex scanning, if you can accept a one-year warranty instead.
