Editor’s note
The i3 sits between the cheap Roombas and the smart ones, and the specification that places it is the navigation: gyroscope.
That is the middle of three approaches. Random bouncing, as on the 694, has no idea where it has been. Camera or LiDAR mapping knows the room precisely. A gyroscope tracks the machine's own turns and distance, which is enough to clean in tidy rows and build a usable map without the cost of a camera or a laser turret. In practice it finishes a room properly instead of wandering, which is the single biggest improvement over a budget machine.
That mapping enables the features people actually want: room-by-room cleaning, no-go zones, scheduling and voice control. It has a HEPA filter and anti-tangle rubber brushes, and it detects carpet and increases suction there.
Two numbers set expectations. Runtime is 75 minutes, the shortest here, so a large floor will need a recharge and resume. And there is no self-emptying dock, meaning you empty the onboard bin by hand every few runs — the chore that most determines whether a robot stays in use.
At 95 mm tall it clears less furniture than the 85 mm machines. It does not mop.
Buy it if you want methodical cleaning and mapping without paying for LiDAR, and emptying a small bin regularly does not put you off. Spend up for a self-emptying dock if it will.
