Logitech MX Master 2S: Specs, Features, Pros & Cons

Seven buttons, two wheels and a sensor that runs on glass make up the MX Master 2S, an office mouse from the generation before the current 3S. It is still sold, and it is still the full-size MX shape that owners of the later models would recognize.

The body is large and sculpted for a right hand held flat, with a second wheel under the thumb for sideways scrolling. The main wheel shifts between ratchet and free spin by itself. There are seven buttons in total, and Logitech's software maps them per program and pairs the mouse with three computers through a receiver or Bluetooth. A 500 mAh cell powers it, with quick charging for a flat battery, and its battery rating matches the newer MX models, so a charge lasts through weeks of office work without a thought.

The weaknesses are about age. Its sensor resolution is low next to gaming mice, though it covers everything an office screen asks. The mouse is heavy, built to rest under a palm and move slowly. It has no USB-C port and charges over an older connector that most newer gadgets have dropped, though Micro-USB cables are still easy to find. And the 2S has the louder mechanical clicks of the earlier generation, which the newer model replaced with quiet ones. In a private office the noise goes unnoticed, and in a shared room it carries.

The buyer who picks it today already knows the MX shape, finds a 2S for well under the newer model and has a spare cable of the right type. That buyer gets the same scrolling and the same shape as before.

How this VS Score was computed

Score 49: each known spec is measured against the median of all mice (81 products), then weighted; 50 means level with that median. In classes of six or more, a value beyond the class’s 10th–90th percentile range counts as that limit, so one extreme product cannot set the scale. 49% of the scoreable weight could be used; unknown values, features not applicable to this class and proxies (battery capacity where a rated life exists) add or remove nothing.

Editor’s note

The MX Master 2S is the generation that made this shape famous, and buying one now is entirely a question of what the newer models cost. The sculpted right-handed body, the thumb wheel and the free-spinning main wheel are all here, and the ergonomics have not changed materially in the two revisions since.

The scrolling is still the reason people become attached to these. SmartShift lets the main wheel switch between ratcheted clicks and a free spin depending on how hard you flick it, which turns a thousand-line document into one gesture. The separate thumb wheel handles horizontal scrolling properly, which matters more than it sounds if you live in spreadsheets or timelines.

Tracking comes from Logitech's Darkfield laser, which is the practical advantage over most office mice: it works on glass and gloss, where optical sensors give up. Sensitivity runs to 4,000 DPI, well short of a gaming mouse and entirely irrelevant for the work this is designed for.

Two things date it against the 3S. Charging is Micro-USB rather than USB-C, so it needs a cable you probably no longer carry, and the buttons are the older, louder mechanical switches. The 3S moved to a near-silent design that is quieter in a shared room. Battery life is unchanged at around seventy days.

At 145 grams it is a heavy mouse, and deliberately so: this shape is built to be rested on rather than flicked, and anyone who plays games with it will find the weight and that sensitivity ceiling limiting. Logi Options+ handles remapping and per-application profiles, and it pairs with three devices at once over Bluetooth or the Unifying receiver.

Buy this if you find one substantially cheaper than the 3S and neither the port nor the click noise bothers you. Pay the difference for the newer model if you work near other people, or if you have already standardized on USB-C.

The bottom line

The Logitech MX Master 2S earns a VS Score of 49, below the median of the 81 mice it is measured against (a score of 50 is level with that median).

Who it’s for
Spreadsheet and timeline workers who want the MX shape, the free-spinning wheel and the thumb wheel, and have found the older model well below the newer one.
Who should look elsewhere
Pass if you have moved every cable to USB-C, share a quiet room with other people, or want a mouse that can also game.
The trade-off that matters
The charging port dates it. Micro-USB means keeping an older cable at the desk or in the bag, which gets more awkward every year as everything else moves to USB-C.
The main alternative
Logitech MX Master 3S: the same shape with USB-C charging and near-silent clicks, worth the difference in a shared room
