SteelSeries Aerox 5 Wireless: Specs, Features, Pros & Cons
The unusual control on the Aerox 5 Wireless is a small rocker on the side that flicks up and down, sitting above the two conventional thumb buttons. It is the one feature that explains the whole mouse: SteelSeries wanted more bindings than a shooter mouse offers without building the twelve-button grid of an MMO model, and this is the compromise it reached.
Nine programmable controls is an awkward number in a useful way. It is enough for a battle royale with utility commands, a MOBA, or a creative application with a handful of shortcuts, and not so many that the thumb has to hunt for them. At around 74 grams it stays easy to move, which a genuine MMO mouse does not.
The shell is perforated, and that brings the usual consequences. Dust is visible inside it, and while SteelSeries rates the mouse IP54 against splashes and debris, that is protection rather than permission to rinse it under a tap. The 128.8 mm body is long, so small hands will struggle, and the side-button arrangement takes a while to become automatic.
The published specification is mid-range and honest about it: a TrueMove Air optical sensor at 18,000 CPI, tracking to 400 IPS, 2.4 GHz and Bluetooth, USB-C charging and up to 180 hours in the most economical mode. A fifteen-minute charge returns roughly forty hours. Real endurance with lighting on and the radio active will land well below the headline.
One buying note: confirm the listing is the wireless model. The lighter wired Aerox 5 shares the name and the shape, without the radio.

How this VS Score was computed
Score 59: each known spec is measured against the median of all mice (81 products), then weighted; 50 means level with that median. In classes of six or more, a value beyond the class’s 10th–90th percentile range counts as that limit, so one extreme product cannot set the scale. 62% of the scoreable weight could be used; unknown values, features not applicable to this class and proxies (battery capacity where a rated life exists) add or remove nothing.

Editor’s note
The Aerox 5 Wireless is the mouse I would suggest to someone who keeps running out of buttons mid-fight but recoils from the full MMO grid. The rocker is the test. A thumb that learns it within a week means the mouse has earned its place. Keep mis-flicking it, and nothing else here will change your mind.
In use, the bindings are the setup investment. Put the two commands you panic for on the rocker, leave the conventional pair for the ordinary things, and resist filling every slot just because it exists.
The open shell is a lifestyle question more than a durability one. The splash rating means an accident is survivable. Cleaning is another matter: dust will be visible inside, and the people it bothers know who they are.
Battery behavior follows the usual arc: the headline number belongs to the most economical mode, and lighting plus the low-latency radio lands real endurance well below it. The quick-charge habit (minutes on the cable while making coffee) matters more than the maximum.
Choose it for battle royales, MOBAs and creative work with a handful of shortcuts. Skip it for left-handed use, for ultra-minimal shooter setups, and if a solid shell feels right. Check that the listing is the wireless model, since a lighter wired one shares the name.

The bottom line
The SteelSeries Aerox 5 Wireless earns a VS Score of 59, above the median of the 81 mice it is measured against (a score of 50 is level with that median).
- Who it’s for
- Players who use several side commands (battle royales, MOBAs, utility-heavy shooters) but do not want the weight and grid of a true MMO mouse.
- Who should look elsewhere
- Left-handers, ultra-minimal shooter setups, small hands on a long shell, and anyone who dislikes dust showing through a perforated body.
- The trade-off that matters
- Nine reachable controls at a weight close to a shooter mouse, in exchange for an open shell, a long body and battery figures quoted in the most economical mode.
- The main alternative
- SteelSeries Aerox 3 Wireless: the same open-shell idea with a conventional button count, lighter and cheaper, if the rocker is not the draw.
