Editor’s note
The VANGUARD 96 is built around one idea: you should not have to give up the numpad to get your mouse arm back. A 96% layout keeps every key of a full-size board — number pad, arrow cluster, function row — but strips out the gaps between them, so the whole thing occupies roughly the desk space of a tenkeyless.
The switches are Corsair's own MLX Quantum linears, pre-lubricated at the factory with a short 1.2 mm actuation. More interesting is that the board is hot-swappable: the PCB takes any compatible 3-pin or 5-pin switch, so Cherry, Gateron or Kailh alternatives drop in without soldering. That is unusual on a mainstream gaming keyboard and it meaningfully extends the board's life.
Build quality backs it up. The frame is sculpted aluminium, there are four layers of sound-dampening foam to kill the hollow ping cheaper boards have, and a magnetic leatherette wrist rest comes in the box. Polling runs at up to 8,000 Hz, there are six dedicated G-keys, a rotary dial, and a small LCD screen for stats or animations.
Two things to check before buying. First, this is the wired model — Corsair sells a separate wireless VANGUARD 96, and the two look nearly identical in listings. Second, and more easily missed, the board ships with several different switch options. Retailer listings frequently stock the MLX Fusion tactile or MLX Plasma linear versions rather than the MLX Quantum, so read the switch line, not just the model name.
There is also no USB passthrough, which the pricier GALLEON does have, and at 994 g this is not a keyboard you toss in a backpack.
Buy it if you want full-size functionality on a crowded desk with room to tinker. Skip it if you need wireless or a lighter board.
