Razer BlackWidow V4 Pro: Specs, Features, Pros & Cons

Full-size keyboards have quietly become a minority product, and the BlackWidow V4 Pro goes the other way and commits completely. It is 466 mm wide before the wrist rest attaches, with a numeric pad, a column of dedicated macro keys down the left edge, a rotary dial, separate media buttons and a lighting strip around the base. This is a keyboard designed to be the object the rest of the desk arranges itself around.

Underneath the presentation the specification is more conventional than the positioning implies. The switches are ordinary mechanical rather than magnetic or optical, and they are soldered in place. Polling runs at up to 8,000 Hz over a fixed wired connection, the top case is aluminium alloy, and there is sound dampening inside. It weighs a little over 1.6 kg, which is a virtue if it never moves and a nuisance if it does.

The parts that earn their place are the physical controls. Five dedicated macro keys, a dial and separate media buttons are arguably more useful to someone cutting video or working in a CAD package than to most gamers, and they are why this board turns up on desks that have nothing to do with games. The lighting is the opposite: extensive, nicely implemented, and irrelevant to anything the keyboard is actually good at.

The reasons to hesitate are about what it does not do rather than anything it does badly. There is no wireless option at any price, and none of the adjustable-actuation or rapid-trigger capability that now appears on cheaper boards, including Razer's own. For a product sitting at the top of a range, that is a lot of ground conceded, and it only adds up if the layout and the controls are specifically what you came for.

Editor’s note

The BlackWidow V4 Pro is the full-size, everything-attached option, and the feature that genuinely distinguishes it is on the back.

USB passthrough — a port on the keyboard wired through to the PC — is nearly extinct on modern boards and remains genuinely useful for a headset dongle, a mouse receiver or a drive you plug in daily. Nothing else in this group has it. Add a rotary knob, dedicated media controls and a full-size layout with a numeric pad, and this is a keyboard that expects to be the centre of a desk rather than to share it.

Polling runs at 8,000 Hz, which is the top of the range here, and the top case is 5052 aluminium alloy with sound dampening. At 1,639 g and 466 mm wide it is a substantial object.

Two things to weigh against the price. The keycaps are ABS rather than PBT — they develop a shine with use where PBT does not, which is a visible economy on a flagship. And the switches are conventional mechanical and not hot-swappable, so there is no adjustable actuation, no rapid trigger and no analog input, and no changing the feel later. It is also wired only.

Buy it if you want a full-size board with a knob, media keys and USB passthrough, and mechanical switches are what you want. Buy a Hall-effect board if competitive response is the goal, or a PBT-capped board if key shine bothers you.

The bottom line

The Razer BlackWidow V4 Pro earns a VS Score of 40, trailing most of the 101 keyboards we compare here, at least on the spec sheet. It stands out for a much higher polling rate, uSB passthrough and rotary knob. Just be aware of fewer connection options and the missing hot-swappable switches before you buy. Weigh those trade-offs against what matters most to you.

The VS Score is calculated from the weighted specifications above, compared with every other keyboard we track — a shortlisting guide, not a substitute for your own priorities. See how we score.
