MSI MAG 27C6FA: Specs, Price, Pros & Cons

The MAG 27C6FA sits at the budget end of MSI's gaming range. It is a 27-inch panel in the standard 16:9 shape running at 1920 x 1080, with a 1500R curve pronounced enough to be noticeable at a desk without wrapping around the head. MSI calls the panel Rapid VA, its name for a VA layer tuned for faster pixel transitions than the type is usually credited with.

Resolution is the decision the whole monitor hangs on. Full HD across a screen this size sits well below the sharpness a desk monitor of this size usually offers, and the saving has gone into refresh rate and contrast instead. Whether that is the right trade depends entirely on what the screen is for and how close the chair is.

Connectivity is one DisplayPort 1.2a and two HDMI 2.0b, plus a headphone jack. There is no USB of any kind, no KVM switch and no built-in speakers, so this is a monitor that shows a picture and does nothing else for the desk. The stand tilts from minus five to plus twenty degrees and moves in no other direction, but the 100 x 100 mm VESA pattern behind it takes a standard arm.

This is the shape of a first gaming monitor rather than a second one. Someone shopping for a screen to read and write on all day, or for a display that will also run a laptop over a single cable, is looking at the wrong product. Someone assembling a cheap PC whose graphics card will never trouble a higher resolution is looking at close to the right one. The curve is the part you will either like immediately or stop noticing within a week.

How this VS Score was computed

Score 41: each known spec is measured against the median of VA gaming monitors, 27 to 31 inches (11 products), then weighted; 50 means level with that median. In classes of six or more, a value beyond the class’s 10th–90th percentile range counts as that limit, so one extreme product cannot set the scale. 71% of the scoreable weight could be used; unknown values, features not applicable to this class and proxies (battery capacity where a rated life exists) add or remove nothing.

Editor’s note

The reason to pick this one over the flat IPS alternatives at the same price is contrast. MSI rates it at 180 Hz with a 0.5 ms GtG minimum response, and the panel's 3000:1 native contrast means blacks are darker than an IPS can manage, which matters more in a dim room than the viewing-angle advantage IPS would give you.

The numbers elsewhere are honest rather than impressive. Brightness is 250 nits typical, which is fine indoors and not enough to fight a sunny window. Color coverage is 93 percent sRGB and 73 percent DCI-P3, so this is not a display for color-critical work, and the HDR Ready badge means signal acceptance only. Pixel density at this size and resolution works out at around 82 ppi, which is noticeably softer for text than a 1440p panel of the same diagonal. For gaming at a normal desk distance the softness matters much less, and the upside is that a mid-range graphics card can drive 180 frames per second here.

Every input carries the full refresh rate, so a console and a PC are treated the same way. Adaptive-Sync reaches down to 48 Hz, which is a usefully wide window for a graphics card that cannot always hold the top of the range. What the monitor will not do is tidy a desk: there is nothing to plug a keyboard, a mouse or a drive into, so all of that stays on the PC. The panel without its stand weighs under four kilograms, which is worth knowing if an arm is in the plan.

This suits a player who wants high refresh on a budget and accepts 1080p. Anyone who reads or works on the same screen all day should look at a 1440p panel instead.

The bottom line

The MSI MAG 27C6FA earns a VS Score of 41, below the median of the 11 VA gaming monitors, 27 to 31 inches it is measured against (a score of 50 is level with that median).

Who it’s for
Budget players who want a fast curved panel for dim-room gaming and are happy to stay at Full HD.
Who should look elsewhere
Anyone who reads or works on the screen all day: at this diagonal the resolution leaves text soft, and the stand only tilts.
The trade-off that matters
High refresh and strong contrast for very little money, in exchange for a coarse pixel structure, ordinary brightness and nothing to plug peripherals into.
The main alternative
MSI MAG 245C X24: the smaller model in the same budget MAG line, for anyone who wants this idea at a tighter pixel density.
